City of San Juan public library receives multiple funding awards

San Juan, TX – Hidalgo County Commissioner Tito Palacios presents the City of San Juan Public Library with a ceremonial check in the amount of $200,000 from its Urban County Program which receives funding from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development on Friday, November 13 at the San Juan Library Gazebo.

Last year, U.S. House of Representatives Congressman Ruben Hinojosa provided the first contribution by appropriating $250,000 for a new public library for the City of San Juan. This funding provides the City of San Juan a solid foundation to begin the planning and development of a new library. The City of San Juan has appropriated an additional $100,000 from its Urban County funds as well.

Mayor Pro-tem Lupe Rodriguez heads up the city’s library planning committee that meets monthly regarding this new construction. Rodriguez will update the press and community with their progress at Friday’s press conference.

San Juan’s current library is located at 1010 S. Standard Ave. At only approximately 2500 square feet, the existing library is not large enough to handle the burgeoning population. The San Juan Public Library currently offers the following programs: Outreach reading program with the San Juan Nursing Home.  Story time held on Wednesday afternoons.

San Juan Librarian Armandina Sesin adds “every summer we have a summer reading program for the children.  We are going to have Food for fines from November 23rd to December 23rd and anybody who has overdue materials can return them by bringing two non-perishable items in place of the fine. These non-perishable items will be donated to the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley.”
