Unveiling of San Juan History Book
As the city approaches its 100th birthday in March of 2010, the San Juan Economic Development Corporation is honored to present the City of San Juan with this capsule of our vast and rich history. In March of 2009, the board of directors of the SJEDC took action to proceed with the publication of this book. Led by EDC Executive Director Miki McCarthy, the SJEDC provided the opportunity for local residents to share their life stories and family histories that are the priceless threads in the fabric of San Juan’s history.
The SJEDC often sponsors local students to work on various projects throughout the city. Roseann Bacha-Garza was brought into the project by the EDC to bring the book to fruition. Together with a committee of local residents and former leaders, Bacha-Garza was able to gather countless oral histories and precious photographs which are highlighted throughout the entire book.
SJEDC Executive Director Miki McCarthy and Roseann Bacha-Garza hope that this work will bring back fond memories and inspire the telling of more colorful stories. McCarthy regards the book as a present to The City of San Juan on the occasion of its 100th birthday, a present that The San Juan Economic Development Corporation was delighted to give.
Bacha-Garza is a graduate student at the University of Texas Pan American and is studying History and Anthropology. During her studies, she has immersed herself in several towns and cities along the Rio Grande Valley to learn about this region of the country that has so much history left to uncover. |
